Coming to awareness on January 30th, 11942 early in the morning, 9S was deployed immediately to fight in the 14th Machine War. A Scanner model, originally he was meant to gather intelligence and hack into machine systems as support, working in solitude. 9S is particularly inquisitive and sophisticated, and when he did the inevitable thing and hacked into the YoRHa servers, the decision was made to dispatch an E unit to be his partner, given the designation 2B.2B's primary role at that time was to execute 9S, which she did so and he was reset back to factory parameters. This became a vicious cycle of life and death - they would be partners, 9S would inevitably start poking around where he shouldn't be and 2B would be forced to execute him. Despite this, constant resetting of 9S, 2B found herself getting closer to him and attempted to request a transfer so she would no longer have to kill him.
Transfer denied.
2B started acting colder to 9S in the hopes that he wouldn't bond with her, but that was futile. Despite the Bunker's best efforts, not all of 9S's memories would be wiped with each reset. He became aware that he was missing chunks of time and hoarded the precious memories he could, carrying them with each reset. Now aware that 2B was contracted to kill him, he began to fight back, which is how he became combat adept whereas most Scanners are simply incapable of combat. They're not programmed for it. This made him a rather effective partner in combat as they navigated the war and had the unintended effect of pushing them closer together.
In the three and a half years they've been together, 2B has eliminated 9S 48 times. Despite this, 9S holds onto deep, complicated feelings towards 2B, feelings that are often in conflict. He desires the closeness while at the same time some part of him wants to kill her before she can kill him again. Even though feelings are prohibited, 9S embraces his all the same, making him a bit of a pest to some of the other androids around him. The 47th death saw them both sacrificing themselves by tapping their black boxes and destroying several goliath machines at once.
On his 48th life cycle, when 9S hacks into the YoRHa server to discover that Council of Humanity did not predate the YoRHa project that he's a part of despite that being the official party line, his Commander is just exhausted by the whole charade of the cycle. When he questions her she offers up a data chip with all the missing files and the answers and tells him to look if he really wants to. 9S of course cannot help himself and he finds out that humanity has long since been wiped out. Thousands of years before the aliens arrived in fact and he anguishes over how to tell 2B. He didn't have the chance to tell her before their final operation began.
Although at the end of routes A/B, 9S lost his body to corruption and 2B choking him, this time he was not reset when he was uploaded back into his usual body. The operation goes terribly wrong as all of the YoRHa soldiers become infected with a virus that makes them unstable and 9S and 2B detonate their black boxes to destroy them. They come to in new bodies on the Bunker and are berated for leaving the battlefield in the first place, but the same virus appears then and all of the operators fall prey to it, as well as the Commander. She tells them they're the final two members of YoRHa and to get out of there before the Bunker is destroyed.
Back on Earth, they're separated and 9S finds 2B just in time to see A2 kill her and hear her last words: Nines. In grief and rage, 9S takes it out on every machine he can find on his way to hunt down A2 who happens to disappear after that. Hacking into the Tower with the help of Devola and Popola, 9S learns the downfall of humanity through project Gestalt and encounters a series of 2B models. He breaks down in tears before letting rage take over and tearing each of them apart.
9S learns that not only humanity was destroyed, but that it was simply used as a reason to make the androids fight, to create hardship for the master A.I. behind everything. YoRHa was always going to be destroyed, and now they had no use for them. He admits he knew that 2B was always going to keep killing him, but tells A2 she could never understand their relationship. At that, his life comes to an end when A2 kills him.
Pod 42 and Pod 153 put 9S, 2B and A2 back together after the fall of the tower and attempt to repair his data, despite the corruption. While it seems impossible, 9S does eventually wake up to face his future head on.
Iteration
YoRHa No.9 Type S - or more commonly known as 9S - is an android member of YoRHa, a military faction operating out of the Bunker to take the planet back from the aliens and machines to restore humanity's presence.Locked in a cycle of life and death, when his partner 2B fell in battle 9S lost complete control over his mental faculties and broke free of his programming through corruption. He chased down and slaughtered any machine in his path, rather effectively, and challenged A2 to seek vengeance for someone he cared deeply for, while hating her at the same time.
Falling in battle to A2 and left at her mercy, she hacked into his systems to try and stabilize him. She ordered his Pod unit to protect him before destroying the tower, which inadvertently brought about the demise of YoRHa itself.
Pod 42 and Pod 153, gaining some semblance of sentience made the decision to repair A2, 2B and 9S because their demise was simply unsatisfactory, and so a new future awaits.
As of February 2024, Nines has been updated to his final canon point, the end of his story and is no longer associated with YoRHa, as it has already fallen.
Role
Non-physical Qualities He doesn't seem to have picked up any non-physical traits.
Reasoning 9S doesn't know it yet, but he's slowly poking holes into YoRHa's system. He's programmed to be so curious that inevitably it turns back on the organization itself, but the benefit seems to outweigh the risk - and to that end he's been assigned 2B after all. 9S is going to destroy YoRHa completely, with the help of a virus. He's also going to later lash out and kill machines indiscriminately when he's finally reached his breaking point, as it dawns on him just how much he's been lied to.
